Welcome to The Golden Ball, York’s first community co-operative pub in the heart of Bishophill. We are a Grade II listed free-of-tie pub with a well preserved Victorian layout and beautiful tiled bar. We are listed in CAMRA’s national inventory of historic pub interiors.
We have six hand-pulled cask ales with an emphasis on good quality locally produced beer. There are three permanent ales: the extremely local micro-brewery Treboom’s Yorkshire Sparkle, our best selling 4% very pale ale; Acorn’s Barnsley Bitter is a wonderful traditional session bitter at 3.8%; and Ainsty Ale’s beautifully balanced Assassin Oatmeal Stout 4.9% with hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Alongside those are three ever-changing guest ales, we keep a range of beer styles for all tastes and always have a vegan friendly beer on too!
We like to support local independent businesses. Our pies, scotch eggs etc. come from York Pie Company and we have just started stocking nuts from York Nut Centre. We sell fresh, local, free range eggs from Johnson’s in Terrington, who deliver direct to the pub each week. If you’re at the bar why not donate a box of eggs to HOPING Street Kitchen to help them provide free meals for those in need? Occasionally we have amazing hand-made artisan bread from the nearby Bluebird Bakery.
Our focus is on the community and we have a range of events and community groups using the pub. We have hosted weddings, christenings, weekly baby groups, choirs, Christmas parties, local history groups, gardening events, art exhibitions, craft fairs, clothes swaps and charity fundraisers.
