The Golden Ball is proud to have been the birthplace of York Bar Billiards league. When the co-op was established in 2012, there were only two pubs left in York with bar billiards tables. Keen to safeguard the future of the Golden Ball table, co-op member Michael Shallcross formed the league in collaboration with the Phoenix. Ten seasons later, the league has grown to accommodate eight venues across the city, with players taking part in a range of competitions every year.
The Golden Ball team won the league title in 2017 and 2019, claiming a trophy designed by local carpenter and bar billiards player, Wilf Williams. The league encourages this do-it-yourself approach wherever possible, even extending to the tables themselves: local craftsman Graham Durant refurbishes and builds tables from scratch; the Ackhorne, the Fulford Arms, the Knavesmire, and Walmgate Ale House all currently have tables that he has designed or renovated.
The Golden Ball team is always on the lookout for new players: just drop a line to Michael at firstname.lastname@example.org. Likewise, the league always welcomes new venues, teams, and players of all abilities, so please get in touch if you’d like to be involved, or just pop along and have a chat on any match night. Contact details and fixture information can be found at the York Bar Billiards website, or on Twitter or Facebook.
